About Little League

Although most people use the term “little league” loosely to refer to any kind of organized baseball played by youth, Little League legally refers only to the leagues and teams associated with Little League, Inc., founded in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in 1938. At its core, the purpose of Little League is to provide a safe, fun, wholesome combination of recreation and competition to boys and girls ages 5-18 through regular season play among local teams. Little League is the cornerstone of youth baseball and symbolizes the very best in youth sports for more than six decades. Little League is played by nearly 3 million boys and girls in all 50 states and over 80 countries.

The Little League World Series

Little League’s “flagship” division is its “Majors” division played by 11 and 12 year olds. This is the division highlighted in the Little League World Series. The Little League World Series is comprised of 16 competing teams from around the world and has been nationally televised on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.

Little League also competes nationally at the Seniors (15-16 year olds), Juniors (13-14 year olds) and Intermediate (11-13 year olds) divisions. The Minors division (9-10 year olds) only competes at the state level.
