The "Zackery Lystedt Law" regarding Head Injury Policies in Youth Sports was enacted in 2009 to encourage greater awareness and safety for youth athletes. It requires certain notifications be given to athletes, parents and coaches. It also creates policies for how youth athletes should be treated when suspected of having a head injury.
As part of our effort to comply with these new regulations, NSLL asks that all players, parents, and coaches take a few minutes to read the Concussion Information Sheet put out by the Center for Disease Control.
NSLL is committed to player safety and will continue working to provide a safe environment for children to enjoy baseball and softball. We also affirm the primary responsibility of parents and guardians in decisions affecting their children and will, wherever possible, support parental decisions for their child's safety.
It is NSLL's policy that if a player must come out of a game or practice due to a suspected head injury, the player's parent retains sole responsibility for 1) obtaining any written approval from a health care professional that may be required by the Zackery Lystedt Law and 2) notifying your player’s manager when the child is ready to safely return to play.
